ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER (LARRY SHREEVE) - PAYCHECK ENDORSED 06/02/1972 CO-SIGNED BY: JOHNNY "THE GOLDEN ADONIS" POWERS - HFSID 83282

ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER and JOHNNY POWERS
Paycheck for $75.00 endorsed by the vicious pro wrestler and signed by wrestling promoter John Powers
Paycheck endorsed: ""M. Abdullah/Larry Shreeve", 3x8¼. Also signed by "John Powers". Cleveland, Ohio, 1972 June 2. Check no. 148, drawn on the account of Ameri-Can Wrestling Club at the National City Bank of Cleveland, payable to Abdullah for $75.00. Professional wrestler Larry Shreeve fought under the name ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER (b. 1936). In a scripted sport where illegal moves are more or less expected, Abdullah was legendary for his viciousness in the ring. Often he would grab a fork or pencil to gouge his opponent in the face. Three weeks after this check was signed, Abdullah claimed the National Wrestling Federation title in a brawl with former champion (and pro football Hall of Famer) Ernie Ladd. (Ladd seemed to be winning the fight until he was whacked unconscious with a cane while the referee himself was on the floor.) After retiring from the ring, Shreeve opened, Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food in Atlanta, Georgia. JOHNNY POWERS (b. 1943), himself a former and future NWF champion (1970, 1973) became a popular announcer, hosting TV's "Championship Wrestling with John Powers." Powers, who dyed his hair blonde to fight as "the Golden Adonis", went on to become a major wrestling promoter and owner of a wrestling school. After the NWF folded in 1975, Powers and Abdullah engaged in a bitter public feud, whether genuine or scripted is anyone's guess. Lightly creased. Pinhead sized hole in upper left corner. Bank stamps cross but do not obscure endorsements. Corners and edges lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
