David G. Farragut signs a document discharging Lewis F. Linde from the ship Pennsylvania.
Partly printed Document Signed: "App'd/D.G. Farragut", 1p, 7¾x3¼. Norfolk, Va., 1844 September 27. In full: "This is to Certify, That Lewis F. Linde, 1st C. Music, Term of Service having exp'd, is regularly discharged from the United States' Ship Pennsylvania and from the Sea service of the United States." Also signed: "Edward T. Dunn" as Purser. On verso, in unidentified hand: "Louis F. Linde/1 C Musn/Color-White/Age-21 Yrs/Height-5 ft 8½/Hair-Bro/Eyes-Grey/Complex-Fair/Native of-Germany." David Farragut (known as "James Glasgow" until 1814), was seven years of age when he was adopted by Admiral David Porter, and served in the War of 1812 (he was only 13 when the war ended). In April, 1844, Farragut became executive officer of the Pennsylvania. In the Mexican War, he was in command of the sloop-of-war, Saratoga. In 1861, Farragut was put in command of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. During the Civil War, Farragut bombarded Forts Jackson and St. Philip, captured New Orleans, controlled the Mississippi between Port Hudson and Vicksburg and obtained the surrender of Forts Gaines and Morgan. Heavily shaded, lightly soiled and stained. Folds. Vertical fold touches "F". Silked on verso at folds. Light show through from docket on verso.
