Thsi handwritten letter was penned and signed by the commander of the U.S.S. Pensacola
ALS: "Geo. Dewey", 4p, 5x8. U.S. Flagship Pensacola, Leghorn (Italy), no year April 12. To Mr. Worthington. In part: "We arrived here last Thursday, five days from Piraeus…several of the officers have gone to Rome, Florence &c to get away from here. I am afraid I shall have to stay by the ship for the present as there is considerable business to be attended to by me in the absence of the 'Old Man of the Sea' (on shore) He is in Venice at present enjoying the grand canal…." Captain George Dewey was given command of the U.S.S. Pensacola (1885-1889). The vessel was assigned to the European Station, where she served as flagship of Rear Admiral Samuel F. Franklin. Show through. Folds do not touch signature. Lightly soiled. Mounting strip at blank left margin of first page. 6, ¼-inch surface impressions (not at signature). Overall, fine condition.
