GEORGE DEWEY. ALS: "George Dewey", 1p, 5x7½. The Berkeley-Waiontha, Richfield Springs, N.Y., 1906 August 18. To Mr. Cranford. In full: "Please see that the enclosed is forwarded to the Secy. I have declined the invitation on account of the health of Mrs. Dewey." On May 1, 1898, in the seven-hour Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War, Dewey defeated the Spanish vessels without loss of American life and supported the Army in the capture of the city of Manila. He was promoted to Five-Star Admiral of the Navy, a rank created especially for him, in March 1899. Admiral Dewey married the widow of General William B. Hazen in November 1899. Dewey died in 1917; Mrs. Dewey died in 1931. Slightly creased. Light ink transfer at blank areas. Fine condition.
