Manuscript LS: "George Dewey" as Admiral of the Navy, 11/2p, 7x91/2. Woodstock, 1911 September 9. To Mr. J.E. Boos, Superintendent Public Batln No. 3. In full: "It gives me great pleasure to send a word of greeting to the 'Gallant-177th' New York Volunteers, with whom I served nearly half a century ago, at the siege of Port Hudson. I hope many of the old regiment will be present at the coming reunion, and that they may live to enjoy many more such occasions. God bless you, every one. With affection. Your comrade." On March 14, 1863, Union gunboats under Admiral Farragut's command bombarded Port Hudson, where Confederate troops were positioned north of Baton Rouge. The goal was to move past this Southern defense and head towards Vicksburg. The side-wheeler USS Mississippi, on which 26-year-old Lieutenant Dewey served, was run aground and eventually burned. Two U.S. ships made it past the blockade, eventually leading to the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. Dewey was later on duty with the Atlantic blockade. In the Spanish-American War, on July 1, 1898, Commodore George Dewey, Commander of the Asiatic squadron, destroyed the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay in the Philippines in a seven hour battle. Eight American men were wounded with no damage to U.S. vessels. Spain lost 381 sailors and their entire fleet of ships. Creased with folds. Horizontal fold just touches bottom of "y" in Dewey. Overall, fine condition.
