ALEXANDER FLEMING. War-date TLS: "A. Fleming", 1p, 5x8. England, 1944 October 7. On stationery of the "Ministry of Health Emergency Medical Service, Sector 6/(Pathological Division)/Inoculation Department/St. Mary's Hospital/Paddington" to Monsieur Marcel Franck, Room 229, Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch (London). In full: "In reply to your letter, I shall be glad to see you here on Tuesday next, October 10th, at 12:30." In this letter, Dr. Fleming arranges an appointment in the Inoculation Department of St. Mary's Hospital for a Frenchman staying at a hotel in London. It is possible that Monsieur Franck got a penicillin shot on October 10, 1944. Alexander Fleming had discovered penicillin in 1928. The germ-killing power of the green mold opened a new era for medicine, and WWII provided an opportune field trial for penicillin. For his discovery, Fleming was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Lightly creased. File hole at "Health" on letterhead (all intact). Staple holes at upper blank area. Lightly toned. Overall, fine condition.
