ALFRED AINGER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 04/17/1902 - DOCUMENT 73456

ALFRED AINGER
Master of the Temple; Chaplain to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII
Autograph Letter signed: "Alfred Ainger", 1p (with blank integral leaf), 4½x7. Master's House, Temple E. C. (London), 1902 April 17. To "F. G. Kitton, Esq.". In full: "I am by no means an expert in Thackeray, & I should prove a very inadequate prefacer to any of his works. With many thanks for the compliment implied in your offer, Yours faithfully". Alfred Ainger (1837-1904) was an English writer and literary critic - known for his gentle sense of humor - and also a clergyman. From 1894 he was Master of the Temple, a church built by the Knights Templar in the twelfth century and which figures in both Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part I and in The DaVinci Code novel and movie. One year later, he became Chaplain to Queen Victoria, continuing in that post for King Edward VII until Ainger's retirement in 1903. F. G. Kitton was a popular Victorian illustrator who wrote several books on Charles Dickens. Light mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
