ARCHDUKE FRIEDRICH (AUSTRIA) (DUKE OF TESCHEN) - PICTURE POST CARD SIGNED CIRCA 1915 - DOCUMENT 275347

ARCHDUKE FRIEDRICH OF AUSTRIA HUNGARY
Signed postcard photo, shown in uniform as Supreme Commander of the Austro-Hungarian Army
Postcard Photograph signed: "Archduke [Erzherzog] Friedrich". B/w, 3½x5½. Photo by Adele (Forster), Vienna. Ink letter on verso in an unknown hand, addressed by an uncle to his nephew, bearing 5-penny Austrian stamp (postmark illegible). Captioned (in German): "Taken at Headquarters, January 4, 1915, dedicated to the official war relief service." Shown in uniform, German Iron Cross medals, first and second class. Archduke Friedrich of Austria (1856-1936), the Duke of Teschen, was appointed Supreme Commander of the Austro-Hungarian Army by Emperor Franz Ferdinand on July 11, 1914, promoted to the rank of General Field Marshal that December. Archduke Friedrich held the post until Emperor Charles I assumed it personally in February 1917. The command was essentially a titular one. The Archduke did not interfere in the operational and tactical decisions of General von Hotzendorf. Archduke Friedrich had made the Albertina in Vienna, bordering the Hofburg Imperial Palace, his personal residence, moving his vast collection of graphic art work there. That building and collection are now a celebrated public museum. When many of his properties were confiscated by the newly independent states of the former Empire after World War I, Friedrich waged legal battles - some successful - to recover his holdings. His 1936 funeral was a major event, attended by many scions of the former nobility of central Europe and by entire battalions of the Hungarian Army. Photo slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
