PAT TILLMAN and the ARIZONA CARDINALS (1998)
Football signed by the hero/martyr and over fifty of his NFL teammates
Football signed: "Pat Tillman/#40" and over 50 signatures, including Frank Sanders, Stoney Case, Lomas Brown, Jake Plummer, Simeon Rice, Larry Centers and Aeneas Williams. Wilson Official NFL football, Paul Tagliabue, Commissioner. Signed in brown pen and black felt tip in the white side panels, one of which is printed with an Arizona Cardinals helmet. Many players have added their uniform numbers. PAT TILLMAN (1976-2004) was in his NFL rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals in 1998, playing safety in ten games. Inspired by patriotism after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001, Tillman turned down a $3.6 million, 3-year contract with the team to enlist in the US Army in May 2002. He participated in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and was transferred to a Ranger unit in Afghanistan the following year. On April 22, 2004, Tillman died there under circumstances that are still under investigation more than three years later. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart, and promoted to Corporal. Initial reports that he died from enemy bullets were later superseded by the Army's concession that he had died from friendly fire. Demotions and other disciplinary actions ensued for officers responsible for misreporting the tragedy. Tillman's family, including his brother and fellow Ranger Kevin, continue to press for full disclosure of the circumstances of Pat's death. In a detailed report released March 26, 2007, the Pentagon acknowledged that the reporting of Tillman's death had been seriously mishandled but played down claims of a deliberate cover-up and flatly denied that Specialist Tillman had been shot deliberately at close range. Investigations continued. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals have retired Tillman's number (40), as has his alma mater, Arizona State University. Among the many honors which have followed was the opening of the Pat Tillman USO Center at Bagram Airbase, the first USO center in Afghanistan, funded by a donation from the National Football League. Incidentally, the 1998 Arizona Cardinals were a fine football team, which finished 9-7 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. This signed ball would be appreciated by a fan of the team, as well as by someone wishing to preserve Tillman's memory. Fine condition.
