He sends a letter to a man in Maryland saying "relative to my decision to announce that I was going to vote for President Johnson. I felt that I must do so if I was to continue to live with myself"
Typed Letter signed: "Arthur S. Flemming", 1p, 8x10. Eugene, Oregon, 1964 November 25. To Carson C. Hathaway, Silver Spring, Maryland. In part: "I am grateful to you for your comments relative to my decision to announce that I was going to vote for President Johnson. I felt that I must do so if I was to continue to live with myself...I will be forever grateful to you for the service you rendered the Civil Service Commission...." In 1939, Arthur S. Flemming (1905-1996) was appointed to the U.S. Civil Service Commission by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was Eisenhower's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare from 1958-1961. Dr. Flemming was the recipient of two Presidential Medals of Freedom, one in 1957 from President Eisenhower and the second one bestowed on him in 1994 by President Clinton. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
