Original art signed: "Hugo L. Black", 1½x2¾ black silhouette affixed to 3x5 card. Hugo Lafayette Black (1886-1971) served as a police judge and county solicitor in Birmingham, Alabama before entering the private practice of law in 1919. Once a member of the Ku Klux Klan, he served as a Democrat from Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1927-1937, when he became President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first Supreme Court appointee. Black, who had introduced a bill in the Senate that later became the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, served as Associate Justice until his death in 1971. During his years on the court, Black always carried a copy of the United States Constitution in his pocket. Ink note on verso, "Born Feb. 27, 1886 Alabama", unknown hand, no show through. Soiled, lightly stained. Worn edges.
