Byrnes signed this card "U. S. S." as United States Senator from South Carolina
Signature: "James F. Byrnes/ U. S. S." as U. S. Senator. 5x1¼. Byrnes (1882-1972) was Secretary of State from 1945 to 1947. A lawyer and newspaper editor, Byrnes had been a U.S. Representative (1911-1925) and U.S. Senator (1931-1941) from South Carolina and an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court (1941-1942) before joining Truman's Cabinet. He was later Governor of South Carolina (1951-1955). Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
