ASSOCIATE JUSTICE LOUIS D. BRANDEIS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/20/1939 - DOCUMENT 158417

BRANDEIS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO WRITE AN ARTICLE FOR HARVARD'S MENORAH SOCIETY JOURNAL

LOUIS D. BRANDEIS
. ALS: "Louis D. Brandeis", 1p, 6x7. Chatham, Mass., 1939 July 21. On "Mrs. Louis D. Brandeis" stationery, "Mrs." crossed out, to Henry Hurwitz. In full: "Re yours of 19th. To my regret - I may not write the article you so generously suggest. The Gilbert Murray and the Engleman articles made the Spring Menorah especially worthy." Lightly creased at upper blank margin. 2 paper clip impressions at upper left corner. Fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope, addressed by hand to: "Mr. Henry Hurwitz/The Menorah Journal/63 Fifth Avenue/New York City". Lightly soiled. Fine condition. In 1906, HENRY HURWITZ and Horace Kallen, both Harvard graduates, founded the Harvard Menorah Society to promote Jewish culture. In this letter, Brandeis refers to the society's journal. The Harvard Menorah Society became a center of Zionist activity in America. Brandeis had entered Harvard Law School when he was 18 and earned the highest average in the law school's history, graduating in 1877. Former Professor of Greek at Oxford, GILBERT MURRAY was active in the cause of world peace. He was chairman (1923-1938) of the League of Nations Union and first President of the General Council of the United Nations Association. Appointed by President Wilson, LOUIS D. BRANDEIS was the first Jew on the Supreme Court, serving as Associate Justice from June 5, 1916 until he retired on February 13, 1939, five months before he wrote this letter. Two items.
