ASSOCIATE JUSTICE LOUIS D. BRANDEIS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 11/17/1940 - DOCUMENT 279040

LOUIS BRANDEIS
Brandeis handwrote, signed and dated this letter to Charles Schwager in 1940, four days after Brandeis' birthday and less than a year before his death. In it, he thanked Schwager for his birthday greeting and wished him a speedy recovery.
Auttograph letter singed "Louis D. Brandeis". 1 page, 5 ¾ x 6 ¾, on Brandeis' personalized stationery. Nov. 17, 1940. Addressed to "Mr. Charles Schwager". "Dear Mr. Schwager: My thanks for your birthday greeting and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Cordially,". In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941, born in Louisville, Kentucky) as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Brandeis, the first Jewish Associate Justice (1916-1939), who had established his reputation of handling cases involving social problems during a year of legal practice in Boston, had come to specialize in labor-management suits and developed the Brandeis brief, still used as a legal reference. Brandeis' support of President Wilson's theory of enforced business competition and his crusade against monopolies led to the passage of the Federal Trade Commission Act (1914) as well as Brandeis' appointment. Until his retirement in 1939 at the age of 82, Brandeis continued to make his mark on the issues of labor, competition, economics and social reform. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
