ASSOCIATE JUSTICE LOUIS D. BRANDEIS - TYPESCRIPT SIGNED - DOCUMENT 42927

LOUIS D. BRANDEIS. Typescript signed: "Louis D. Brandeis", 1p, 5¾x7¾. Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Photograph of Lincoln, b/w, 1x2, beneath imprinted text. Louis D. Brandeis (1856-1941), who signed this typescript of the address Lincoln gave at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, was an admirer of Lincoln and the democratic principles for which the former President stood. The top graduate of the 1877 class at Harvard Law School, Brandeis gained a reputation as a champion of the Court for cases involving social problems. "The People's Attorney" emphasized the shared responsibilities of both labor and management in a democracy, devised the Brandeis brief and worked against monopolies, which resulted in the passage of the Clayton Anti-Trust Act (1914). Brandeis, who was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, served as the first Jewish Associate Justice until 1939. His tenure on the Court was noted for his belief in the self-restraint of the federal bench -- that federal judgments should respect state laws. Erie Railroad Company vs. Tompkins (1938) stood as the most important opinion based on this principle. An enthusiastic supporter of Zionism, Brandeis became the namesake of the first Jewish-sponsored nonsectarian university in the U.S. He wrote a number of books, most notably, Other People's Money and How the Bankers Use It (1914). Slightly creased with fold, not at signature. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 27x19.
