ASSOCIATE JUSTICE LUCIUS Q. C. LAMAR - SIGNATURE(S) - DOCUMENT 83237

 
LUCIUS Q. C. LAMAR. Signature: "Autograph of/L.Q.C. Lamar/Associate Justice of the/Supreme Court of the/United States", 3½x2¼. Lamar, the nephew of the first Vice President and second President of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar, was the first former Confederate to be appointed to the Supreme Court. He had been a Mississippi Congressman before and after the Civil War, the Confederate envoy to Russia, U.S. Senator (1877-1885) and President Benjamin Harrison's Secretary of the Interior (1885-1888). Lamar served on the Supreme Court from 1888 to his death in 1893. Mounting stains on verso (no show through). Erased pencil notes at upper left corner. Circular postmark impression at upper blank area touching the "L" of Lamar. Overall, fine condition.
