The Nobel Prize-winning immunologist signs a First Day Cover honoring blood donors.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Baruj Benacerraf", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover Honoring American Blood Donors 1971, 6-cent giving Blood saves lives stamp affixed, postmarked New York, New York, March 12, 1971, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Benacerraf, who held the Fabyan Chair of Comparative Pathology at Harvard, shared the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with George Shell and Jean Dausset for discoveries concerning the genetic regulation of the body's immune system. Benacerraf, a Venezuelan-born scientist, who had joined the faculty of the New York School of Medicine in 1956, was a professor in pathology there by 1960. From 1968-1970, Benacerraf was the chief of the immunologic laboratory of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. Famed for his research in immunologic response, he attained the Fabyan chair at Harvard in 1970. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Fine condition.
