BEN BARD - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED CIRCA 1932 CO-SIGNED BY: VICTOR McLAGLEN - HFSID 83966

BEN BARD; VICTOR McLAGLEN
Bard muses on the importance of friendship. McLaglen pens a more conventional note on verso.
Autograph Note signed: "Ben Bard", 2 pages (front and verso), 6x4 album leaf. To Pearl, in full: "Friendship - Football - San Francisco - Fanforan - Automobiles - Speeding - Los Angeles - Friendship - years - Cosmopolitan - Marathon - Friendship. It's a great adventure that starts with Friendship - finds it running thru with Friendship and finished with the full meaning of the word. Best o' everything. Sincerely". Dated (unknown hand) Sept. 14, 1932. Also signed on verso: "9-14-31/To Pearl, one of the most charming girls and hostesses it has been my pleasure to meet during these many years. Sincerely, Victor McLaglen". BEN BARD (1893-1974) formed a vaudeville comedy team with Jack Pearl. In film, Bard was often cast as a "suave heavy", a dapper, smooth-talking fellow with a dark side, as in The Seventh Victim (1943). In the 1950s, he headed the New Talent Department at Twentieth Century Fox. He founded the Ben Bard Drama studio in 1960. Bard outlived two of his actress wives, divorcing the third. He is buried beside the first, serial film star Ruth Roland. English actor VICTOR McLAGLEN (1886-1959) was a skilled boxer, heavyweight champion of the British Army before World War I. He staged a 6-round exhibition with world champ Jack Johnson. In the 1920s, McLaglen became a character actor, beginning in the silent era, especially known for playing drunks. He had starring roles, too, winning the 1935 Academy Award for Best Actor for The Informer. A favorite of director John Ford, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor opposite John Wayne in The Quiet Man (1952). Among his other well-know films were Gunga Din (1939), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Around the World in 80 Days (1956). On TV, he appeared in episodes of Rawhide and Have Gun, Will Travel directed by his son, Andrew McLaglen. Creased and toned. Edges worn, lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
