BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BUTLER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 01/28/1835 - DOCUMENT 17131

BENJAMIN F. BUTLER
Attorney General awaits the arrival of General Call of Florida Territory.
ALS: "B.F. Butler" as Jackson's Attorney General, 1p, 5x8. (Washington, 1835) January 28. To McClintock Young Esquire, Treasury Department. With integral address leaf docketed "28 Jan 35". In full: "Gen. Call ought to have been here on the 1st instant, but having heard of the death of the U.S. agent at the Havana concluded to remain till he could hear from. His letter having been 25 days in coming on, did not reach me till the 20th instant so that although I wrote him immediately that his presence here was indispensable, there is no certainty that he will arrive till the 15th of February." BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BUTLER, a former member of the New York State Assembly (1827-1833), served as Attorney General under Presidents Jackson and Van Buren (1833-1838). Following his term, he was U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1838-1841, 1845-1848). General Richard K. Call was a delegate in Congress from the Territory of Florida (1823-1825) and receiver of the land office of the Territory of Florida. He served as Governor of the Territory of Florida from 1836-1839 and 1841-1844. Vertical fold runs through first "B" in signature. Lightly creased, light stains at upper left corner and address leaf. 3/4-inch vertical tear at center of upper blank edge. Upper left corner of integral leaf torn away from removal of seal, which is affixed at bottom left.
