BENJAMIN F. BUTLER. Autograph Letter signed: "B. F. Butler", 3p (integral leaf), 4x6¼. Niagara Falls [N.Y.], August 25, n.y. To "My dear Crosby", in full: "Maggy's letter gives you all details until its date. After dinner yesterday, the weather became so far settled as to permit us to drive around Goat island - stopping a the points of interest. This prepared us for an early retirement, and for sound sleep. No one enjoyed more of it than Willy, who thinks this morning, that the air of Niagara agrees with him. We are all well, & in half an hour will be on our way to the Suspension Bridge. Love to Mary & Hatty & the boys, and my best regards to Mr. & Mrs. W. H. Crosby. Affectionately yours". Benjamin Franklin Butler (1795-1858) a former member of the New York State Assembly (1827-1833), served as Attorney General under Presidents Jackson and Van Buren (1833-1838). In 1836-1837, he served concurrently as Secretary of War. Following his term, he was U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1838-1841, 1845-1848). He helped to organize what is today New York University's law school. ¼x¾-inch hole touches "F. B" of signature. Pinhead sized hole on p1. Slight paper separation along vertical fold on both pages. Mounting adhesive on blank verso shows through faintly at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
