BENJAMIN F. BUTLER. Manuscript LS: "B.F. Butler", 1p, 8x10. New York, 1846 December 18. To C.H. Lawrence, Esq., Collector. In full: "Enclosed herewith I send you a bill of particulars of the plaintiffs demands in the suit brought against you, in the N.Y. Com. Pleas by Edward Poppe. When you shall have examined the same, I will thank you to return the paper to me, with a statement of the grounds of your defense." Docketed on verso, probably by Lawrence: "Decem 18n 1846/U.S. Atty/relative to suit of/Poppe for return duties/on flag Pipes". BENJAMIN F. BUTLER (1795-1858) was Jackson's Acting Secretary of War (1836-1837) and Jackson and Van Buren's Attorney General (1833-1838). He left the cabinet to become U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1838-1841, 1845-1848). CORNELIUS W. LAWRENCE served as Collector of Customs of the Port of New York from 1846-1850. Folds, not at signature. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled. 3 minor stains at lower blank margin. Lightly shaded edges.
