BENJAMIN H. BREWSTER
The US Attorney General signs and dates his name
Signature: "Benjamin Harris Brewster/att. Gener/[illegible] to 15 July 1883", 7x4¾. Benjamin H. Brewster (1816-1888) was appointed by President Polk (1846) to adjudicate Cherokee Indian claims against the US Government. He was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1867-1868) and later US Attorney General under President Arthur (1882-1885). Brewster is remembered for saying: "A lawyer starts life giving $500 worth of law for $5 and ends giving $5 worth for $500." Toned. Tears on top edge. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light surface creases. Tape on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
