Signature in black ink on a 5x3 card
Signature: "Branch Rickey", 5x3 card. Branch Rickey (1881-1965) was a very poor baseball player, and average quality manager, and the greatest general manager in the history of the sport. As Business Manager of the St Louis Cardinals (1919-1942), he basically defined the role now expected of a general manager. Through contractual ties with minor league clubs, he created the first farm system, one which brought 8 National League pennants and four World Championships during his tenure. As GM of the Brooklyn Dodgers (1943-1950), he helped turn the Dodgers into a perennial contender, and he broke the color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson and other black players. (This move took courage and careful preparation, given attitudes prevailing at the time, and reflected his idealism as well as his keen business sense.) As Pirates GM (1950-1955), he signed the first Latino superstar, Roberto Clemente. (The Dodgers and Pirates failed to win a World Series while he was with each club, but did so soon after he left, relying on the system he had created. Rickey introduced the batting helmet, and was ahead of his time in developing new statistical measurements of baseball performance. "The Mahatma" was a baseball visionary. Fine condition.
