Rare signed photograph of the Union Army officer posed in a seat, adding his rank as a Brevet Brigadier General under his name (4½x6¼)
Photograph signed: "Adam Badeau/Bvt Bridg Gen USA", Sepia 4½x6¼. Adam Badeau (1831-1895) was an author and diplomat who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Badeau enlisted in the army while working as a writer for the Noah's Sundays Times, becoming a member of the staff of Thomas W. Sherman. He fought in the Siege of Corinth, the defense of New Orleans, and the attack on Port Hudson, being injured during the battle of Port Hudson and taking time away from battle to recover. Badeau joined Ulysses S. Grant's staff as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1864, remaining with the staff until 1969 and leaving the army with a full rank of captain and the brevet rank of Brigadier General. After the war, Badeau served as the Secretary of the United States embassy in London (1869-1870) and U.S. Consul in Havana, Cuba (1882-1884) in addition to his career as an author of fiction and non-fiction novels. Corners worn and creased. Lightly soiled, with small, faint stains across. Slight creases. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Image slightly silvered (not seen head on). Wear on bottom margin of image. Otherwise, fine condition.
