BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES BARNETT - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 1888 - HFSID 22288

BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES BARNETT
As President of Cleveland's First National Bank, the Union veteran writes about a matter affecting the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home, of which he was a Director.
Autograph Letter signed: "James Barnett", 1 page, 6x9½. Cleveland, Ohio, 1888. To "Dear Winship", in full: "I was called upon some time ago by Mrs. Losey with reference to Maud whom she desired to get away from the 'Home'. I advised her to let her remain at least for a while. By all means she had best return long enough at least to clear up her record. Possibly you can prevail upon her to do this. Truly yours" [signature] I return here letter from the home." [Item not included.] Merchant, banker and Union Civil War officer James Barnett (1821-1911) raised and commanded the 1st Ohio Light Infantry at the Battle of Shiloh and siege of Corinth. He was promoted to Chief of Artillery and Chief of Ordnance of the Army of the Cumberland, taking part in the Battles of Stones River and Murfreesboro, and in the Chattanooga Campaign. Cited for gallantry and efficiency by General Rosecrans, he became aide-de-camp to General George Thomas, brevetted to brigadier general, in March 1965. Returning to Cleveland as a bank president and civic leader, serving for a time as police commissioner, he was active in charities, especially those affecting veterans, serving as Director of both the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home and the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Normal mailing folds. Creased and toned. Adhesive residue at top let corner. Lightly soiled. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
