James Lusk Alcorn wrote this letter to an autograph hunter from Friars Point, Mississippi in 1873. This letter includes his term as Governor of Mississippi.
Autograph letter signed "J.L. Alcorn". 1 page, 5x8 ruled paper, mounted to a 5¼x8¼ sheet of orange paper. Friars Point, Mississippi, May 23, 1873. Addressed to Mr. C. A. McCullouch, New York City. In full: "Dear Sir: I return herewith my autograph - and in reply to your enquiry - state that I was elected Governor of Mississip pi [sic] in March 1870 - Served until November 30, 1871 - when I resi gned [sic] the office - having yet two years of unexpired term, to take my seat in the Senate. Very Respectfully your obt". Alcorn lived and practiced law in Friars Point, Mississippi; he also died there. Illinois-born Alcorn (1816-1894) was Republican Governor of Mississippi (1870-1871) and U. S. Senator from Mississippi (1871-1877). He was also elected U. S. Senator in 1865, but was not allowed to take his seat. A lawyer and slave-owner, Alcorn initially opposed secession before the American Civil War, but his opposition was mostly inspired by realpolitik. During the Civil War, he was a brigadier general for his state. A Whig before the war, he considered the Republicans to be the Whig's successors and switched parties after hostilities ceased. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Show-through from adhesive, which touches date but not signature or body of letter. Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Mounting paper has irregular edges. Letter was folded in half vertically and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
