BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES L. ALCORN - SIGNATURE(S) - DOCUMENT 34215

JAMES LUSK ALCORN
Small card signed by James Lusk Alcorn, Governor and U. S. Senator from Mississippi
Signature: "J.L. Alcorn/Miss". 3½x2¼ card. Illinois-born Alcorn (1816-1894) was Republican Governor of Mississippi (1870-1871) and U. S. Senator from Mississippi (1871-1877). He was also elected U. S. Senator in 1865, but was not allowed to take his seat. A lawyer and slave-owner, Alcorn initially opposed secession before the American Civil War, but his opposition was mostly inspired by realpolitik. During the Civil War, he was a brigadier general for his state. A Whig before the war, he considered the Republicans to be the Whig's successors and switched parties after hostilities ceased. Lightly toned, foxed, soiled and bowed. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise in fine condition.
