Photo of the X-1 in flight, signed by the pilot of the launch plane
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/from the X-1 team/Bob Cardenas". B/w, 10x8. Photo bears a facsimile signature of X-1 pilot Chuck Yeager, inscribed to Bob (possibly signer Cardenas) On October 14, 1947, test pilot Chuck Yeager's Bell X-1, Glamorous Glennis, powered by four liquid oxygen and alcohol rockets, was attached to a B-29 mother plane until reaching an altitude of 25,000 feet, streaked at over 662 mph to more than 40,000 feet over Rogers Dry Lake in southern California. Yeager climbed to 42,000 feet and reached a speed of 670 mph (March 1.015). This flight is dramatized in the feature film The Right Stuff (1983). Robert L. "BOB" CARDENAS (b. 1920 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico) was a decorated B-24 bomber pilot over Germany in World War II. A test pilot himself after the war, Cardenas flew the B-29 which launched Yeager's X-1 on its historic flight. Before retiring as a brigadier general in 1973, Cardenas held several key commands, including Special Plans Division/US Strike Force Command, USAF Special Operations Force, and the National Strategic Target Division. Fine condition.
