ROBERT H. DUNLAP
Marine's postcard from "Paris Island" signed by Marine brigadier general
Picture post card signed "Robert Dunlap". 5½x3½. Postcard of Parris Island, South Carolina. With letter from "Walter/N.C.O. School Co. T" to Miss Vera Gunther of Albany, Indiana, Dunlap postmarked Parris Island, SC, Aug. 30, 1918 with one red 2ยข stamp affixed. Parris Island was designated a Marine Corps Recruit Depot in 1915; it was spelled with only one "R" during World War I. Dunlap (1879-1931) was a brigadier general in the United States Marine Corps. Appointed a second lieutenant in 1898. He served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War and in the Battle of Tientsin and the Boxer Rebellion in China. Dunlap received the Navy Cross for distinguished service as regimental commander during World War I. He gave his life to rescue a woman imprisoned in a landslide in 1931. The USS Dunlap, a Mahan-class destroyer, was named after him. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
