The Union Brigadier General writes a note concerning the well-being of a friend
Autograph Note Signed: "S.C. Armstrong," in black ink. 5x8, 1 page. In full: "Very glad to hear that Mr. Glilman is better...Send letters here to Everett Ham. Telegram to Care Maj Hopkins, 1 E 28 St." No date. Samuel C. Armstrong (1839-1893) was a commissioned officer during the American Civil War who went on to found the Normal School, now Hampton University. In the Union Army, he was ranked Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General and was the commander of the 8th United States Colored Troops. After the war, he established Hampton University. He was revered for educating former slaves whom he served with in the army, as well as anyone who saw himself fit enough to take up an education. Armstrong's goal was to give blacks the knowledge and tools necessary to become educators themselves, and when 84 percent of the 723 Hampton graduates from the first twenty classes went on to become teachers, his goals were realized. He most famously educated Booker T. Washington in 1872 who would go on to become an educator and advisor to government officials. Fine condition.
