Signed, two-page Autograph Letter (1933), thanking his hostess during a visit to Scranton, Pennsylvania
Autograph Letter signed: "Bruce Bairnsfather". 2 pages (front and verso), 7¼x10. New York, N.Y., 1933 February 26. On letterhead of The Devon to "Dear Mrs. Wainwright" in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In full: "These are just a few lines of very sincere thanks and appreciation for the very enjoyable hospitality which you extended to me, whilst I was in Scranton. I only wish I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Wainwright at the same time. It is also with great regard that I speak of that venerable bottle of whiskey which you so kindly revived me with after the show. My next book is supposed to be finished by June and produced next Fall. If it ever gets written! I will take great pleasure in sending you a copy to join your very flattering collection. Yours v sincerely". Accompanied by original autograph envelope, postmarked New York City on the same date. Bruce Bairnsfather (1888-1959), born in India to a British military family, served with a machine gun unit in France during World War I until he was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Ypres. Reassigned to the rear, he began drawing cartoons of life in the trenches featuring privates Old Bill and little Alphie. Military commanders at first found his work "vulgar," but began to promote it when they discovered it bolstered morale. Collections of his work included Fragments from France and Bullets and Billets. Bairnsfather's Old Bill became a familiar figure, featured in movies and plays. During World War II, finding the British military uninterested in his services, Bairnsfather went to work for the US Army publications, Yank and Stars and Stripes. His portrayal of common soldiers at war was said to be a major influence on American cartoonist Bill Mauldin. Normal mailing fold creases - passing through lower edge of signature. Lightly soiled on verso at creases and edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
