C. DOUGLAS DILLON - CURRENCY SIGNED CIRCA 1957 CO-SIGNED BY: ELIZABETH RUDEL SMITH - DOCUMENT 26708

DOUGLAS DILLON and ELIZABETH RUDEL SMITH
Dollar bill signed by Douglas Dillon and Elizabeth Rudel Smith, U. S. Secretary of the Treasury and U. S. Treasurer under President John F. Kennedy
Dollar bill signed "Elizabeth Rudel Smith" in blue ink and "Douglas Dillon" in black ink. 6x2½. Silver certificate, Series 1957. DILLON (1909-2003), born Clarence Douglas Dillon, was the 57th Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Baines Johnson from January of 1961 to April of 1965. Dillon, a veteran of World War II, had previously served as U. S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France (1953-1957). Dillon also served on the Executive Committee of the National Security Council during the Cuban Missile Crisis. As a private citizen, he was President of the New York Metropolitan Museum and a Trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation (1960-1961). Dillon was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1989. Canadian-born SMITH (1911-1997) was Democratic National Committeewoman from California (1956-1961, 1962-1965) before being named Treasurer of the United States under President John F. Kennedy from Jan. 30, 1961 to April 13, 1962. She resigned as Treasurer to return to California politics and help the Democrats delay Richard M. Nixon's political comeback with a defeat in that year's governor's race. Smith remained active in Democratic politics for about 20 years after that. Smith's signature has bled lightly, otherwise in fine condition.
