CASPAR W. WEINBERGER - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/13/1981 - DOCUMENT 320372

CASPAR W. WEINBERGER
As newly designated Secretary of Defense, he promises to arrange a school tour of the Pentagon, signing with his nickname, "Cap".
Typed Letter signed: "Cap", 1 page, 7¼x10½. San Francisco, California, 1981 January 13. On personal letterhead to Kuhlman Fluehr, Vice President, Corporate Relations, Kuhlman Corporation, Birmingham, Michigan. In full: "Thank you for your January 6th letter. I greatly appreciate your congratulations. I am sure that we could arrange a tour of the Pentagon for the Chapel Hill-Chauncey Hall School class. I think the best thing to do would be to have Mr. George Jones call my secretary in Washington, Mrs. Kay Leisz, so that we could arrange a tour when we know what dates they will be at the Pentagon. Thank you again for your letter and your good wishes. Sincerely". Caspar W. Weinberger (1917-2006), a former California legislator and Aide to then-Governor Ronald Reagan, came to Washington in 1970 and quickly established himself as a capable administrator and influential policymaker under Presidents Nixon and Ford. His posts included Chairmanship of the Federal Trade Commission (1970), Director of the Office of Management and Budget (1972-1973) and Secretary of Health Education and Welfare (1973-1975). After a period in the private sector as Vice President of Bechtel (1975-1980), he became Secretary of Defense (1981-1987) under President Reagan, strongly supporting the military buildup of that decade. Although he had long opposed arms sales to Iran, Weinberger was indicted in the "Iran-Contra" affair but pardoned by President Bush (1990). Normal mailing folds. Paper clip crease on top margin. Corners slightly worn. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
