His clipped signature as Speaker of the House of Commons (1805)
Signature: "5th July, 1805/Chas. Abbot/Speaker", 3½x1¼. Accompanied by brief clipped, printed biography. Charles Abbot, the first Baron Colchester (1757-1829), a scholarly English barrister, was first elected to Parliament in 1795. Abbot promoted administrative reforms which resulted in the Royal Records Commission and the national census of 1801. He was Speaker of the House of Commons (1802-1817), elevated to the peerage after his retirement from that office. As a trustee of the British museum, he argued successfully for free admission. Clipped signature lightly toned and creased. Torn on left lower edge. Otherwise fine condition.
