CHARLES FRANCIS ADAMS III
A signature from Adams on a printed card for his position as Secretary of the Navy
Printed card signed: "C F Adams", in black ink, 5½x3½ affixed to a 6x4½ sheet. Charles Francis Adams III (1866-1954), the grandson of President John Q. Adams and great grandson of President John Adams, was Secretary of the Navy in the Hoover administration (1929-1933), representing the US at the London Naval Conference of 1930. He was Mayor of Quincy, Massachusetts, the ancestral home town (1896-1897). A yachting enthusiast known as "Dean of American helmsmen," he captained the Resolute in successful defense of the America's Cup (1920). He was associated with Harvard University for over half a century, as an undergraduate and then law student, as treasurer of the corporation and as President of the Board of Overseers. Stained on top margin of card. Heavily toned. Sheet stained across. Binding holes on left side. Lightly soiled. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
