CHIEF FRED LOOKOUT - PICTURE POST CARD SIGNED - HFSID 156769

CHIEF FRED LOOKOUT
His pencil signature on verso of a picture postcard illustrated with his picture.
Postcard Photograph signed in pencil: "Chief/Fred Lookout/of the Osages". B/w, 3½x5½. Photo reproduces a drawing or etching with his likeness. Captioned in lower margin (in what the postcard makers must have considered a compliment to him): "Chief Fred Lookout of the Osages, who differs from the majority of the tribesman in that he refuses to live in idleness." Fred Lookout (1865-1949) first became Principal Chief of the Osage Indians in 1914, and served continuously in that office from 1926 until his death. As a boy of 12, he participated in his tribe's last buffalo hunt. In 1918, Chief Fred Lookout testified before a Congressional committee in defense of the use of peyote in Native American religious rituals. Photograph side soiled and creased. Verso soiled on left side affecting signature.
