CHIEF JUSTICE OLIVER ELLSWORTH - AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED 01/08/1776 CO-SIGNED BY: LAZARUS WATREUS - HFSID 168346

OLIVER ELLSWORTH
Oliver Ellsworth signs an autograph document.
Autograph Document Signed: "O. Ellsworth," 1p, 7½x4½. Hartford, 1776 January 8. The future Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1796-1799) who, with Patrick Henry and William R. Davie negotiated all disputes with Napoleon in 1800, writes to John Laurence, Treasurer. In full: "Please to pay to Mr Lazarus Watreus Three pounds Sixteen Shillings & four pence for Assistance & mony (sic) expended for a Sick Connecticut Soldier, on his Way home from the Army near New York as pr amt & charge the State." The press at the time increasingly published sentiments for independence, which was given its clearest expression in Thomas Paine's pamphlet "Common Sense," published also in January 1776. It was another Connecticut soldier, Capt. Nathan Hale, who was captured in New York and executed as a spy just eight months later. Endorsed by Watreus on verso. Also on verso: "audited 4 Sepr 1777/E. Pitkin." Usual folds, else fine.
