Oliver Ellsworth signs an autograph document.
Autograph Document Signed: "O. Ellsworth" as Member of the Committee, 1p, 8¼x6½. Hartford, 1776 July 3. Also signed: "T. Seymour". To John Lawrence, Treasurer. In full: "Pay Giles Russell Esq. Ten pounds in Bills-for his 1st months Wages as Majr in Colo Seldens Regt now raising for the Continental Army at NYork & charge the Colony." Endorsed by Russell on verso. The next day, July 4, 1776, the Colony of Connecticut became the State of Connecticut. Attorney Oliver Ellsworth, who had moved to Hartford in 1775, served on the "Pay-Table", the Connecticut Committee of Four that handled all of the military finances for the colony of Connecticut during the American Revolution. The Pay-Table consisted of four men, whose members were rotated during the lengthy confrontation with England. Promissory notes, which required the signature of three of the four members of the Pay-Table, were issued for loans. Ellsworth, a member of the Continental Congress (1777-1784) and one of Connecticut's first two U.S. Senators (1789-1796) was appointed by President Washington as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1796, serving until 1799. Folds. Overall, fine condition.
