SALMON P. CHASE. Manuscript LS: "S.P. Chase" as Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury, 2p, 8x10. Treasury Department, 1862 March 17. To Charles Almy, Collector at Fall River, Mass. In part: "I have received your letter of the 14th instant, enquiring whether an enrolment can properly issue to a vessel from the District to which she belongs, while lying in another District, and submitting the case of the schooner at present lying at your port for which a new enrolment under which you have refused to allow her to be removed to Barnstable on the ground that its issue is not in conformity with the provisions of law governing the issue of marine papers. Your action in this case is approved...." Chase, a candidate for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination, was Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury from 1861-1864 and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1864 until his death in 1873. Creased. File holes at blank margin. 3 letters of signature slightly smudged.
