CHIEF JUSTICE SALMON P. CHASE - SIGNATURE(S) - DOCUMENT 287163

SALMON P. CHASE (Chief Justice)
Chase signs a 3½x1 piece of paper
Signature: "S.P. Chase", 3½x1 Chase, a candidate for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination, served as Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury from 1861 until his resignation in October 1864. Two months later, Lincoln appointed him Chief Justice. In one of his first acts, Chase appointed John Rock as the first Black American attorney to argue cases before the Supreme Court. In March 1868, Chase presided over the removal trial of the impeached President Johnson in the U.S. Senate. He was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1868 but lost support because he favored voting rights for Black men. Irregularly cut edges. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
