CIVIL WAR. ALS: "John W. Madison", 4p, 5x8. In Line of Battle, 1864 June 6. "To his lovin wife who I love so well Mary J. Madison". In part (spelling uncorrected): "My Dear we have had a very hard time of it We have ben fitin this is the 32 day and it has been three weeks since I have had off My shues and I don't now when I will have the chanse to pull them off...We have lost won man kild and five woundead badley and some very slite Billy Smith got slitely woundead but he is still with us. Since the fite has ben going on we have lost 80 men out of our regiment We lost six kild last Friday and thirty two woundead and won missin...." Almost complete transcript included. Toned, stained. Writing is faint. Pinhead-size holes at blank cross folds. Sporadically shaded. Creased.
