CLYDE AITCHISON - INSCRIBED SIGNATURE - DOCUMENT 31468

 
CLYDE AITCHISON
The long-time head of the Interstate Commerce Commission signs his autograph beneath a newspaper article about him.
Inscribed signature: "To Miss Manning -/With sincere regards/Clyde B. Aitchison", 7¾x10¼. Newspaper article with photograph of Aitchison affixed at upper portion. The article is headed: "The Railroads Have Been Working on Him". Clyde Bruce Aitchison (1875-1962) served on the Interstate Commerce Commission for 34 years (beginning in 1917), serving under six U.S. Presidents. A Republican, Aitchison held office throught the New Deal and Fair Deal programs, and he wrote some eight volumes explaining ICC acts and court decisions interpreting them as well as numerous papers and articles. A former journalist and attorney, he began his career in public service when he was appointed secretary of a special commission to draw up new tax and revenue laws in Oregon in 1905. He then helped to draw up a railroad bill and authored the act that established the state's Public Service Commission. Aitchison went to Washington in 1916 as a representative of the National Association of State Railroad Commissioners to assist the ICC in matters relating to railroads. Both article and mounting sheet are lightly creased. Upper left corner and edge torn away. Mounting remnants on verso lightly show through at corners. Slightly soiled at blank margins. Overall, fine condition.
