The Cherokee colonel, a member of the Confederate Congress, is shown posed in suit and vest on this 4¼x6½ cabinet card.
Photograph signed: "Your friend/E. C. Boudinot". Sepia, 4¼x6½ cabinet card by C. M. Bell of Washington. Elias Cornelius Boudinot (1835-1890), the son and namesake of a Cherokee Indian leader assassinated in 1839 for favoring assimilation into Anglo society, emerged as a leader of the pro-slavery faction of the Cherokee nation, and served as Secretary of the Arkansas secession convention of 1861. He served in the Confederate army, rising to lieutenant colonel under the command of his uncle, Stand Watie, and was elected to the Confederate Congress in1863. After the war, he was active in treaty negotiations between the US government and the Cherokee. He became a US Senate staffer, and a prominent railroad lawyer, arguing aggressively for railroad construction. Corners lightly worn. Minor ink smear in signature (legible). Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
