The WWII Air Force "Ace in a day" signs an envelope commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Pentagon Station.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Ernest Bankey Jr Col USAF Ret/383/380-Ftr Sq/364th ftr Group/9½ Air 2 probable, 5 destroyed 5 damaged ground", 6½x3¾. Envelope commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Pentagon Station, Washington, D.C., May 12, 1933, 29-cent U.S. stamp affixed. Ernest E. Bankey (1920-2009) served with the Eighth Air Force in the European Theater of World War II. He became an "Ace in a day," shooting down five German aircraft on December 27, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. In all he flew 110 combat missions, destroyed 11.5 enemy planes in the air and another five on the ground, and earned the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the French Croix de Guerre, and other medals. After retiring from the US Air Force as a Colonel in 1968, he worked on deep space projects at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
