The World War II hero signs modestly as "Van T. Barfoot/M. H."
Signature: "Van T. Barfoot/M. H.", 5x3. Sergeant (later Colonel) Van Thomas Barfoot (1919-2012), half Choctaw Indian on his mother's side, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism on the Salerno beachhead on May 23, 1944. Barfoot advanced through a minefield, disabled two machine guns, destroyed a tank and artillery piece, killed 8 Germans and captured 17, and helped two wounded comrades return to American lines. He continued service throughout the campaign in France, and later in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, receiving further decorations and a purple heart. He advanced through the ranks to the grade of colonel. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
