COUNT FRANCIS LUTZOW - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - DOCUMENT 203309

COUNT LÜTZOW, FRANCIS
Autograph letter by the scholar who built support for an independent Czech nation.
Autograph Letter signed: "(Count) Lützow", 3p (integral leaf), 4½x7. London, March 17, n.y, circa 1905. On personal letterhead to "Dear Sir", in full: "I should feel greatly obliged if you would let me know when my article on Stendhal will appear in the North American Review. I wrote to you on this matter from Paris, giving the address of my club. I have since my return to London seen Mr. [name illegible], but he said that as I wrote to you directly he could give me no information. I very much hope that it will be possible to publish the article soon. Many friends both here and in America have asked me when the article will appear. I should be very much obliged if you would write to me at your earliest convenience to above address. Believe me, Yours faithfully". Francis, Count Lützow (1849-1916) was an Austrian subject whose scholarly writings helped build support for an independent Czech nation. He wrote a history of Prague; a biography of Jon Hus, the martyred Czech church reformer who foreshadowed the Protestant Reformation; and a History of Bohemian Literature (1899), which did much to acquaint the English-speaking world with the region's literary tradition. Touring the US to deliver university lectures, he was warmly welcomed by crowds of Czech-Americans. He fought a duel with the Austrian Ambassador to England, Count Deym. Lützow did not live to see Czechoslovakia's independence at the end of World War I. His article on Stendahl did appear in the North American Review in 1905. Light mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
