COUNT JEAN BAPTISTE COUNT DE ROCHAMBEAU - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 08/13/1791 - HFSID 259183

JEAN BAPTISTE DONATIEN de VIMEUR, COMTE de ROCHAMBEAU. Manuscript LS: "de Vimeur Rochambeau" as Commandant General of the Army of the North, 1p, 6x8. Valencieunes, 1791 August 13. In French, partially translated. In part: "I have the honor to send to M. de La Gravine the report you wished to be made...." In early July 1781, Rochambeau led his 5,500 soldiers to join General Washington's forces at White Plains, New York. Washington and Rochambeau led a combined force of about 10,000 south to Yorktown, Virginia, where they joined other Continental forces and the French troops led by Lafayette. The force of allies attacked Yorktown on September 28th, and on October 19, 1781, Lord Cornwallis surrendered and the Revolutionary War was, in effect, over. Rochambeau commanded the Army of the North in the French Revolution and was made a Marshal of France in December 1791, four months after this letter was written. Folds, vertical fold touches the "de" of signature. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
