Envelope to King Ferdinand II of Spain, written by Alexander II in translated Russian and listing many of Ferdinand's titles. A rare piece signed from one European monarch to another.
Autograph envelope unsigned. 17¼x11 unfolded, 7x11 folded. In Russian, translated: "To Your Highness King Ferdinand II, By God's Grace King of Sicily and Jerusalem, King of Parma, King of Tuscany, etc. etc. etc. to my brother and my dear friend". This appears to be a envelope for a letter sent to King Ferdinand II of Spain; it lists all of Ferdinand's titles. Alexander II (1818-1881, born in Moscow, Russia) was Emperor of Russia from 1855 to 1881. He signed the Treaty of Paris in March of 1856, ending the Crimean War, as well as emancipating the serfs in 1861 and founding schools across Russia. In spite of reforms, many added burdens were placed upon the peasants and terrorism increased. In 1881, Alexander II was killed when a bomb exploded in St. Petersburg. Lightly toned and creased. Folded twice vertically and horizontally, comes folded vertically. Pinholes along top edge and where folds meet. Large tear at top edge. Wax seal remnants at top, left and bottom edge, with stains along all edges and corners. Light tear at top edge along right fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
