DAVID BALTIMORE - SIGNATURE(S) - HFSID 281071

DAVID BALTIMORE
The 1975 Nobel Prize-winner in Physiology and Medicine penned his signature on this index card
Signature: "David Baltimore", 5x3 card. David Baltimore's (b. 1938) early scientific investigations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology focused on questions about the relationship between DNA and RNA in a cell's internal functions, specifically on how cancer-causing RNA viruses manage to infect a healthy cell. One result of this research was the identification of the enzyme reverse transcriptase. Baltimore shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Renato Dulbecco and Howard Temin for this discovery, which has greatly expanded scientists' understanding of retroviruses such as HIV. Baltimore was later involved in a major scientific controversy in which he defended a junior colleague against charges of data falsification. Baltimore was named President of the California Institute of Technology in 1997, although he resigned in 2005. He remains active as a part of the CalTech campus community. Note in pencil in unknown hand on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
