DONALD M. DICKINSON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - DOCUMENT 17458

DONALD M. DICKINSON
Short note from Dickinson to an unnamed General, inviting him to visit him and his wife
Autograph letter signed: "Donald M. Dickinson", in black ink, 5¼x8. In full: "My dear General, If you are up, Come over and see Mrs Dickinson. If not come in morning to Arlington. If you come now stop for me at Chamberlains". Donald M. Dickinson (1846-1917) was a lawyer and politician, serving from 1887 to 1889 as United States Post Master General. After a successful established law practice in his native Michigan, Dickinson began to pursue politics, working within the Democratic Party in Michigan and supporting Grover Cleveland's candidacy for President. After Cleveland became President, he offered Dickinson a position with the recently created Civil Service Commission, which Dickinson declined; he accepted Cleveland's second offer as Postmaster General. He remained in the position until the end of Cleveland's term, later returning to his law practice. Multiple folds. Light surface creases. Stray ink marks and smears, some conflicting with signature. Right edge frayed. Paper remnants on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
